NEW FACULTY: WELCOME DR. KERNICKY

Dr. Timothy Kernicky joins the department as a Research Assistant Professor. Dr. Kernicky is no stranger to the department, having served as an adjunct instructor since 2018, teaching the structural materials lab. He’s taught six consecutive semesters of the class, to date, to almost 220 students. He enjoys finding what works for each student and guiding them to their ‘aha’ moment. “Students change and evolve over time,” he shared. “Each class is different.” That’s what he likes.

Dr. Kernicky, who graduated Cum Laude from Gardner-Webb University with a BS in mathematics, also enjoys integrating engineering software into his work. He earned his MS and Ph.D. from UNC Charlotte.

As a Ph.D. student, he became member of Alpha Chi, a national academic honor society. He’s also a member of ASCE, Structural Engineers Association of North Carolina, and the American Institute of Steel Construction (to name a few).

Kansas-born, Dr. Kernicky now considers Charlotte home. In his spare time, he plays piano at church and video games at home with friends. His research interests center arounds structural health monitoring, vibration damage detection, and nondestructive testing of structures. He will work closely with Drs. Braxtan, Weggel, and Whelan in the department. Welcome to the CEE family.
